Tips for Better Social Media

Social media is an important aspect for most businesses, with many having a dedicated digital marketing strategy. If you don’t have social media then you are probably falling behind and should definitely consider it. However, even if you are already using it is more important to get the writing right for each social media channel.

In this week’s blog, we will go through some tips on how to write better copy for social media!

Social Media Voice:

When a new company begins one of the main points that is established is how they want to convey themselves. Some businesses will go down a very corporate route, strictly business and by the book, others will seem more laid-back but get the job done. This is the same with social media.

Your tone of voice is important as this is how customers will see your brand, so make sure you decide on this before you start social media and stick to it. Do you want to be more informative on social media, or would you prefer to be a bit more chatty?

Once you have established this, make sure to stick to it throughout all channels, be consistent so your customers know how to communicate with you and know what to expect.

Use the right hashtags

Hashtags are a great tool for social media. They can boost engagement and help you reach a wider audience. But if you are doing to use them make sure to use them right, otherwise you could actually be doing your brand more harm than good!

Using too many hashtags can be a bit much and can look spammy on Twitter or Facebook, so try and avoid this. Use relevant ones, and try and use one to three at a time. They are normally best placed at the end of the tweet, but there are some that work within the tweet as well. For example, casual ones like #MondayMotivation or #FridayFeeling can work within a tweet and are great hashtags to use for engagement purposes.

Instagram is probably the only place you can hashtag to your heart's content, but be sure they are relevant!

Don’t Repeat Yourself

How would you feel if you were scrolling through Twitter and saw something, then saw the exact same thing on other social media channels? Your customers use different social media channels for different reasons, so make sure to think about this when posting.

Instagram is more visual, so be sure to post high quality pictures that inspire. Twitter is about short and snappy posts, while Facebook you can be a bit more descriptive. Think about these and be creative, you can even try and give yourself the challenge of coming up with separate marketing strategies for each one, tailoring your message for each channel.

Check, check and check again!

As with all copy and written content, make sure you check what you have written. Make sure it all makes sense, and that there are no spelling and grammatical mistakes - you don’t want those nasty grammar nazis coming after you!

Bad copy with mistakes can also make your company seem unprofessional and sloppy, and that is an association you do not want. Be sure to double check and ask your colleagues to proofread it before it goes out. Most big companies will have a few people to check and approve a social media post before it goes live, so make sure to do the same even if you are a small company!
